28/3/2022 0 Comments Project Spartacus, My Thoughts on the Rumoured Sony's Answer to Microsoft's Game PassIt is rumoured that this week Sony is going to finally unveil what the mysterious “Project Spartacus” is and I thought I'd do a post about my thoughts on what is currently rumoured about the project. Project Spartacus is rumoured to be Sony's Answer to Microsoft's Game Pass, which is a monthly subscription service that gives Xbox and PC gamers access to game streaming, day and date Xbox Game Studio titles and access to EA Play. I have to admit Game Pass is fantastic value, especially if you own an Xbox for Xbox Exclusive games. You can literally join for only £1 and then pay £10.99 a month for the Ultimate Subscription which also includes Xbox Live Gold for multiplayer and Games With Gold or £7.99 a month for either Console or PC only Game Pass. Currently, Sony has two subscription services of its own for PlayStation users, which are PlayStation Plus, which gives you access to online multiplayer, monthly games and the PS Plus collection (if you're on PS5) and PlayStation Now which is a streaming service for some PS2, PS3 and PS4 titles. The idea for Spartacus is that it'll merge these two services to create one subscription that will give you access to a library of games across generations of PlayStation systems which has been rumoured to include titles from the PSP and PS1, along with new and exclusive games dropping into the service each month, which honestly sounds great. It might be a tiered system and offer different features for each plan or it might start with just one plan and gradually expand. So What are my Thoughts? At the start of 2020 I was cutting back on some of my monthly expenses and sadly PS Plus got the cut from me, this was because I hardly ever downloaded or played any of the monthly PS Plus titles on my PS4 and the fact that I don't play multiplayer very much any more so I felt like I was wasting money on the service. The only online service that I pay for now is Nintendo Switch Online because I actually play the retro games on the service and I think that for a year the price is great (especially if you save up the gold points for a discount). I recently upgraded my subscription to the Expansion Pak and I'm really happy with it. I do like to have an annual payment option as well because in most cases it works out cheaper and it means I don't have to remember to renew every single month or be shocked when £17 leaves my bank account, which was something that happened with PS Plus for me almost every month when I had it recurring. I've also never been very interested in the concept of streaming video games. As a collector, I like to own physical copies and something that always put me off getting an Xbox for Game Pass was the fact that the game can be pulled off the service a few months down the line so you'd have to either buy the game digitally or track down a physical copy to continue your progress. Game Pass to me seems like a better way to "try before you buy" rather than a library of games you can own and play forever. I can imagine that Project Spartacus would have the same issue with games leaving the service if it was an IP not owned by Sony. I don't think that the rumoured Project Spartacus is necessarily going to be the BIG Game Pass killer some people are expecting it to be. I think that it'll be something great for PlayStation gamers who want to play some older Sony IP and try out some new games. If Sony can get the price right, say around £60 per year or £7 per month, it might be a service that I'll be interested in checking out and playing some retro stuff on, but if it's too expensive or the selection of retro isn't there, I'm going to have to pass for the time being. So What are your thoughts? Would Project Spartacus be something you'd pay for?
