So Why Did I hack my 3DS?Hacking my 3DS was actually the first time I've ever hacked one of my consoles, I usually don't like to hack my consoles at all because I like to have my consoles as "Stock" or "Vanilla" as possible. However, in the case of the 3DS, it has region locking and it's something that wanted to bypass so that I can pick up physical games for the system for my collection without having to worry if the game is PAL or NTSC. The majority of my collection will always be PAL (because that's the region I live in) but sometimes it is cheaper to buy and play games from other regions or some games were only released physically in a specific region. I think that region locking on games is silly in modern times, I understand why they did it back in the day due to PAL being 50Hz and NTSC running at 60Hz but nowadays all systems run games pretty much the same. I'm glad that the Switch is region free and I hope Nintendo continues this trend going forward. Another reason I thought to hack my 3DS now was that it was announced recently that the Wii U and 3DS eShop will be closing soon so there might be some games that you can't download anymore once it closes in 2023 and with a hacked system I'll be able to download the ROMs for these games if I decide I want to check them out later. I can also back up my own digital games that I have on my system in case Nintendo ever decides that I can't re-download them again in the future. It's probably best to get onto hacking your 3DS now if this is something that you think you might want to do in the future. So Here's an overview of how I did it!BEFORE I get into this part I want to make it clear that this is NOT a Tutorial, I just documented the process and my experience of doing the hack. If you would like to do to it I recommend that you follow this guide that I used, it's updated frequently and it's easy to follow! So the first step I did was to back-up my SD card because I had some cool stuff on there that I don't want to lose. I just did this using windows to drag the files from my SD card onto a folder on my desktop, nothing fancy. Before Starting the hacking process there was a few things I had to do to make sure my 3DS was hackable. The first thing that I had to do was check if my 3DS was already hacked (I knew that it wasn't) and then I checked my system firmware to see what hack I should do, which in my case was "Seedminer". I then had to get my 3DS's unique ID0 number and Friend Code and put these into "Bruteforce Movable" which is the website that generates a very important file called "movable.sed" that you need for the hack. With the "Movable.sed" obtained I was then able to choose what exploit I wanted to do. I chose to do the Exploit where you use Pokemon Picross as I heard it was the easiest one to do. I put my SD card back into my 3DS and downloaded Pokemon Picross from the eShop. This is why it's important that if you want to hack your 3DS at some point you should download that before the eShop closes as it is one of the easiest ways to hack your system. There are other ways and I'm sure the modding community will keep discovering new ways to do this too. After downloading Pokemon Picross and the rest of the required files from the guide, I then put my SD into my computer again and copied over my "movable.sed" file and the other files to my SD Card. I then had to go onto "PicHaxx" and use my "moveable.sed" in order to get a hacked save file for Pokemon Picross and I put this onto the SD card too. I then put my SD card back into my 3DS and launched Pokemon Picross to install Bootstrap onto my 3DS. I did get an error message the first time I did it because I didn't have enough memory left on my SD card but once I deleted a few old Demo's and things, I was on my way and I got the Custom Firmware installed onto my system. The last step in the guide was downloading and installing the apps that makes hacking your 3ds worth it, by downloading some remaining files which where called "cias". I took my SD out of my 3DS again and put the required files and folders onto my SD card. It is important that you follow each step slowly and carefully to make sure the files are in the right place so that you don't run into any errors. I then put my SD Card back into the 3DS and was told to check for an update, my 3DS was already up to date as I updated it before I started but I checked again anyway just to be sure. I then had to go into the Download Play app to get into the "Rosealina Menu" so that I could enter in some settings and then when I opened download play again, I got into the Homebrew menu! I then had to set-up some other settings by accessing the Rosealina menu once again. I just took my time and followed each step on the guide carefully. Now by launching the Homebrew menu again I was able to get into the FBI menu, which allowed me to download the .cia files I had put on the SD Card. I then had to launch my 3DS into "Godmode9" and do a bunch of different settings in there, which included making a back-up for my 3DS on my SD card, I didn't have enough storage on my SD card to do this so I didn't end up doing it, but that's my 3DS hacked! Overall, I found the process of hacking my 3DS quite simple even though I didn't know what some of the things I was doing were, If I didn't have a step by step guide I think I would have been completely lost because it's not something I could figure out how to do by myself. There was also a lot of moving the SD Card in and out of the System and the computer so be prepared for that if you choose to do this. There are still a lot of things I have to look into with what I can do with a hacked 3DS and I still have a lot to learn but I'm really glad that I took an hour out of my weekend to do it! I do feel as though I have more control over my 3DS games so I’m not as worried about Nintendo closing the 3DS eShop as I once was. So Would you ever Hack your 3DS? Or is it something you wouldn't consider doing?
